Cinema Online's Review Back to top

Sammo Hung hasn't changed much except for those strands of sprouting grey hair. This impressive martial arts master is still in a very good shape despite his age - but everybody knows that already. Sammo still kicks ass, although maybe not as high or hard as he used to do.

"Wushu" isn't as complicated as other made-in-China martial arts films, especially those that directors like Tsui Hark or Ang Lee usually prefer. The story and flow is simple but packed with an endless showcase of skills and leaps. The lack of emotions on the actors' part is a major letdown though. After all, these are young kids with raw talent, waiting to explode anytime soon.

At times, the story can be a little messed up, without seeing any effort to untangle it. Some parts of the story were left hanging. What's really annoying is that the young actors were visibly more talented than they are allowed to show, perhaps due to the demands of the script.

The cinematography isn't something to be proud of, with most scenes using only the usual two angles - high and low. Capturing the fast movement of every must be challenging for the director.

Despite lacking the extra boost to make "Wushu" a classic, the young actors presented not only great showmanship but real skills. That alone makes "Wushu" worth watching, if you pardon their acting in terms of drama.

All in all, "Wushu" is definitely amusing for the martial arts practitioners and of course martial arts movie fans.
