What I loved most: it was sort of thought provoking

What I really hated: the alien ships look weird

it isn't as good as most sci-fi thrillers are, but you really have to give it credit considering that it was based on a novel of the same title written by HG Wells in 1898. yes, you read right. so no, you shouldn't expect to see radars and alien detectors and technology way advance than what we have now. aliens are not half the size of humans and they don't fly in orb-shaped saucers. there was no message from space through very advanced mathematical encryption that could probably be understandable to scientists with IQs of 170. it was only a war, initiated by envious beings who watched over the earth for many years and had wanted to destroy us the way we probably would destroy bacteria. in my opinion, it was literally a novel that came to life. the story-telling was pretty much linear, beginning at the eve of the war wherein the aliens were coming down from space through pods being transported by lightning. they went underground to their tripods, which were large machines that had the capability to detect and vaporize humans into dust. humans scrambled away from these machines to save dear life, yet most were not able to flee from the extermination. what was notable about this film was not the effects, but the human aspect. at the point of extinction, men fought over the only running car to the point of killing for it just to escape their own deaths. for people like ray who not only exhibited strong paternal qualities that you can't call by any other name except love, killing someone who've lost reason and rationality to see to it that his daughter survive the danger was also an option that he took unhesitatingly. and then there is the sheer will to survive, to avoid danger at all cost, but to fight when it was absolutely necessary. at the end of the film, the narrator said that this event earned men their rightful place in the cosmos. if only for the sheer resilience of man to survive what seemed to be unsurvivable, and God's design that the small would find means to defeat the strong and formidable, i guess i agree.
