Cinema Online's Review Back to top

One of the cheapest movies ever made, Lions Gate Films' "The Waiting" is the story of frustrated waiters, stingy tippers and dicey food in a generic chain restaurant named Shenanigan's. This is accompanied by after-work parties and over-the-limit freedom that every teenager would craved for.

Dean's (Justin Long) life revolves around parties, sex and more parties while he works at Shenanigan's. A waiter for four years since high school, he has never once thought about his future. That is, until he learns that his previous high school classmate, Chett, is now a successful electrical engineer. Dean's friend, Monty (Ryan Reynolds), is in the same situation but unlike Dean, he is more concerned with partying and sex with under-aged girls.

With the new and shy Shenanigan's staff, Mitch (John Francis Daley), who is trained by Monty, Mitch is introduced not only to the world of Shenanigan's but to its quirky staff. They include Monty's tough-talking ex-girlfriend, Serena (Anna Faris), Shenanigan's "community-concerned" and over-friendly manager Dan (David Koechner) and its sex-obsessed chef, Raddimus (Luis Guzman). To keep the staff entertained throughout their jobs, a common practice called "The Game" is instilled as part of the job.

The upside of this movie? It certainly provides an insight into unproductive youths who have no idea about where they are heading in the future. While some couldn't care less, characters like Dean are just waiting for opportunities to knock at their door. The movie also portrays Western youth culture which involves a lot of sex talk, drugs and disrespect for their elders.

Also, take note of the unsanitary kitchen antics which are totally disgusting. One should really count their lucky stars they're not customers of Shenanigan's or at most, learn a tip or two on how not to be treated as badly in cafes and restaurants.

However, the movie is a bit too draggy, thus making the film a bit boring. It's more about funny conversation and antics, taking place in only one setting, Shenanigan's.

Catch "The Waiting" just for the laughs, or if you're a fan of Ryan Reynolds or Anna Faris.
