Taken

What I loved most: The storyline

What I really hated: wilful teenagers and the naive mum

Teens want freedom. Their mothers, who were wilful when they were teens, give their teen daughters consent to travel without adults' supervision. Naive teens trusting strangers and getting into serious trouble. These could happen to any one family. 2 teenage girls travelled to Paris without adults' supervision. Liam Neeson, an ex secret agent, reluctantly let her daughter go after relentless pressure from his ex-wife. Once the girls arrived in Paris, they were immediately targetted by an Albanian syndicate. They were kidnapped by the syndicate for prostitution. Liam, the doting father, eventually used all his previous expertise, contacts and the few clues left by his daughter to successfully track down the syndicate....and single-handedly exterminating them too. This movie cautions us of how we can be easy victims when travelling overseas. It also provides fast paced, kick-ass action. Enjoy with your popcorns and nachos.

City Of Ember

What I loved most: no hollywood pretty faces and decent storyline

What I really hated: all puzzles falling into place suddenly...and the ending somewhat

Here's the skinny of the movie. A few ingenious scientists decided that the best for mankind after apocalypse was to live in an underground city. The setback:- this underground city could only last for 200 years. After which the survivors will have to return to the "surface". A box containing the exit plan was to be safeguarded an individual and the generations of successors till 200 years expire. However, the box was lost following the death of one of the guardians, and along with his death the secret is buried too. The city is governed by a corrupted mayor and he successfully brainwashed the citizens into believing that light does not exists outside of the city. Of course, there are a minority who didn't (Tim Robbins is one). It is his son and his love who eventually smartly figured out the key, levers, etc to return to sunshine. They even managed to set the whole community free! ( i shan't elaborate on details) However, the movie ends here and it's happy ending. Or should it be?...The earth remember, is supposed to be a huge wasteland with no life and electricity, food, etc. So they're just moving from one doomsland to another. All said, it's still worth watching.

Street Fighter: The Legend Of Chun-li

What I loved most: Chun Li - Kristin Kreuk

What I really hated: boring dialogues and unexciting fight sequences

This is latest effort to cash in on the current lucrative formula of making movies inspired by comics/arcade games. However, this latest offering would have been a disaster if not for Kristin. In this movie, we get a glimpse of a couple of trademark Chun Li fighting moves, a boring storyline of murder and vengence, and nothing else. The villains (Vega, Bison) were quickly disposed of by Chun Li and there was very little trademark moves from Vega or Bison. Ken is even a Tai Chi master here.....is that right? Apparently, the director has no clue how to make this movie a success....go watch this if there are no better choices. In fact, i would recommend the HK version...which was at least wacky.

Eden Lake

What I loved most: the chilling ending

What I really hated: nothing

Youth violence is surfacing all around the world..And in England, there is even campaign against "knife violence". This movie tells how dysfunctional parents can raise dysfunctional kids. This movie tells what sickening pleasures many modern youths derive from showing disrespect to peace and order. This movie tells how unprovoked violence could happen to you and me. This movie paints a very bleak and accurate picture of the social ills that we "normal" folks have to put up with......the question is, just when is our breaking point?

Twilight

What I loved most: breathtaking scenery and beautiful cast

A girl (Kristen Stewart) who has little interest in everything around her is mesmerised by her handsome and mysterious male classmate(Taylor Lautner). She fell hoplessly in love with him instantly. That's because Taylor happens ot be a vampire and she is drawn by his charms with predatory motives, like how old Dracula would charm his victims before killing them. However,Taylor found her unique because he couldn't read her thoughts like he could with others. He fought his primal instincts not to make her his food. Their fascination with each other eventually developed into death defying love for both of them. Taylor's acting is excellent in portraying the confused, vulnerable vampire and Kristen is the trusting, equally vulnerable damsel. The scenery is beautiful The music score is beautiful and the cast, especially Taylor's family, is "beautiful:" Overall, a very BEAUTIFUL love story.

Quarantine

What I loved most: story development

What I really hated: the shaky camera work

A fun report on firemen's lifestyle in Los Angeles turned into a nightmare for a news reporter(Jennifer Carpenter) when the firemen responded to a stress call in a old, run-down building. Tagging along with the firefighters to get a glimpse of their routine work night, their investigation for the stress call soon led them to a woman with blood on her clothes and saliva oozing from her mouth. When they tried to help her, she suddenly sank her teeth into one of them. From there on, it's chaos as more and more of them are infected with the deadly rabies virus. Only puzzling thing was that victims would behave like zombies from "28 weeks later', biting and eating their victims...hmmmm is that right? But anyway, the final part of the movie revealed a bigger plot, masterminded by a/some Doomsday cult member(s). But who's the creature that resembled the one from "The Descent"? Well i'll probably have to watch it again.....or maybe wait for the original Spanish version "REC".... The story development is slow and casual in the beginning, then fast and furious right to the end, just like "From dusk to dawn". So that's why i like it. Go watch it!
