Orphan

Written on the advertising poster: There is something wrong with Esther. And the audience will expect an adjournment until the final divulger in the entire show. I will not say Esther certain horrendous acts will terrify the audience but the plot on the foster mum's lost of a still birth and the events after Esther's adoption was something to watch for. It was the well articulated girl who was so good in mind games that she created a great distress to Kate and John family. Actually, there was nothing new about the scary techniques used in the show when you're a horror movie freak who are immuned some goresome and bloody scenes. It was the good acting skills played by Isabelle Fuhrman and Vera Farmiga which kept me going for the whole show.

District 9

District 9 is an unusual, reflective, and good sci-fi in the recent years. It is certainly not those mindless kinds of explosive blockbusters and requires understanding the Apartheid once under South Africa and the present realities of discrimination, healthcare and other social issues. Quoting a scenario where the prawn look like aliens (who seemed go without cat food) were willing to trade their weapons for the soaring price of food with the Nigeria mafia. The open documentary scene was an appetizer where talks revolved on the MNU organization who manages the aliens and pouring some of social grievances on the slum conditions and social disputes between the minority (aliens) and the majority living community. The camera also displayed the enthusiastic Wikus Van De Merwe (Sharlto Copley) who is overly excited to take on this difficult project. This eventually becomes derision when Wikus is infected by a fluid canister and altered his DNA. The relentless was the attempting seizure of Wikus who was scientifically proven to fire the alien’s weapon of destruction. In another aspect, the viewers will able to witness the inhuman treatment to aliens in slums and laboratory. In spite of a newcomer on big screen, Sharlto Copley is a good actor to watch for. It is also pleasurable to see the computer animated aliens, Christopher Johnson and his cute son who depicted almost like flesh human characters. And the ending is levered on the humanity issue and the film scores well. Actually, I was touched by the final scene whereby an alien (who assuming to be Wikus) folding a metallic flower which somehow expresses the loneliness and craving for a reunion with his family. Last, I hope District 9 could earn your patronage as a good intelligent movies hardly come by these years.

Bruno

Bruno, a German-speaking gay, a slave in fashion, a dreamer and a seemingly multi-layer or complex guy— who satiricically created crude jokes, which polarized the extreme of love and hate for the show. The mockumentary was a clever move implicitly touched on the issues of homophobia, political sex scandal and other social ills in the entertainment industry. Because of fame, Bruno resorted in several ways i.e. alluring a male politician to bed, exchanging an African baby with an iPod, going for a talk show and even exhibiting sadomasochism in hotel with his assistant’s assistant. There were funny dialogues like saying Osama looks like a kind of dirty wizard and a homeless Santa; citing looking up at the stars made him think of all the hot guys in the world in campfire with straight hunters; and suggesting there were a lot of African Americans in Africa. Definitely, Sacha Baron Cohen was a gifted comedian who successfully another unique character, that is, Bruno. And occasionally, despite some of Bruno’s flamboyant, absurd and ignorant attitudes, I felt sorry for him at the scenes where he scorned at the devoted personal assistant, Lutz, after a failure scheme and a slight emotionally scuffle with the security man for his adopted kid. The whole movie was quite comical and not without its value but somehow, I felt its overplay when recapping Borat in 2006.

G.I Joe: Rise Of Cobra

Making a comparison and contrast with the new GI Joe and Transformers seemed unreasonable except they belonged to Hasbro toys. One thing I enjoyed most was the cool fighting gadgets and some futuristic machines. The thrill was the scene when Duke and Ripcord chasing after the nanomites before the destruction of Eiffel Towel and rammed across a high speed train. I felt the director, Stephen Sommers, had overly done it which the show could be condensed in a shorter version rather overly blasting with special effects. Also, a failed plot when Ripcord seemed effortlessly (using verbal command with the help of a simple translation by a fellow Joe, Scarlett) to destroy the missiles heading towards Moscow and Washingston. Also, the bad guys known as Cobra seemed less intelligently to devise any sophisticated strategies... Despite Duke's good look and presuming the No. 1 Joe, some of his plain expressions depicted in the show seemed uncharismatic and dull. Perhaps, there was no much to emphasis on his dialogues and charcater building. In contrast, not to mention the masquaraded Snake, the accreditation was the skill and good acting played by Lee Byung-hun as Storm Shadow. In short, the all show was still entertaining if the audience was looking for pure entertainment.

Where Got Ghost?

I had balanced myself in my expectations when looking at some negative reviews commented by critics and a few positive ones. I decided to give Jack Neo a chance and brought my two family members to give a boost in this local production. First, Road Got Ghost: Story was bad and could not live up to the theme suggested. The same gag using Hokkien and other cliches did not really make me laugh. The moral of this story - Conned until got ghost and all oranges would roll to you. Second, Forest Got Ghost: Story was too ordinary. It was understandable to create lamb jokes using Hokkien due to the two less educated reservists. I could adjust myself to that and a few jokes were still comical. But a fat female ghost who performed David Footballfield magic.. Was I in sitcom or variety show?? Sigh, I was disappointed and could not believe there was a need to execute a CGI of plain flying red object. The moral of this second story- Don't play tricks with big round thing and you will be the heir of David Footballfield. I could not cover my disappointment by saying ''Chey'' after this story. Finally, House Got Ghost. The familarity we become accustomed to when you watched Money not enough 2. The sense of humour still prevailed. But the CGI effect of a landslide destruction to the roadway was inferior. But it did compensate my loss feelings for the first two stories. The moral of this story- Keep the worshipped tablet until got ghost protected you like a Budhha. I decided to write a review for this show by empahsing it was not that dreadful but could not meet its averge rating if making a comparison with those typical low budgeted kind of HK horror films. Also, the dimmer background could not create the eerie atmosphere and yet, I suspected it could for cover up the poor visual and cinematography aspects. Laugh until you scare?? Not at all.

The Hangover

Recapping Hangover, it did offer much slapstick which you were looking for a comedy. It was not a bad idea or even some creativity to trace back a series of events after the bachelors were too high on drugs and of complete amnesia in Les Vegas. Well, the funny man lied on Galifianakis' Alan and his child-like character which gave you moments of laughter. For instance, “ Is this the real Caesars Palace? Does Caesar live here?"And recalling the song he sang.” We're the three best friends that anyone could have…” was kind of hilarious. I could predict he might be the next comedian, Jack Black. I was also laughing at the scene when they transported a tiger in an almost ruined Mez to his owner, Mike Tayson. But the overly exaggerated racist remarks by Mr. Chow seemed rather overdoing it despite his martial background. The another aspect which was likable in the show was the cool soundtrack. However, if you were a serious guy like me, you might get sobered up more quickly rather than hangover. This was the fact when certain scenes was repetitive and used before and its originality. Overall, it was a good cut comedy which not necessarily meant that memorable.
