Surrogates

Surrogates reminds me a little of the recent Gamer, minus the game content. In the distant future, mankind can pick robots to live their lives thru their chosen perfect looking robots called surrogates. The story begins when the son of the founder of surrogates gets murdered. Well in this future, not everyone likes the idea of surrogates and chooses to live their life as human beings. They are however congregated into zones where the robots are not welcomed and led by their leader, the Prophet (sounds like Matrix already?). Bruce Willis plays a cop who uses his surrogate to investigate the murder but when his surrogate is destroyed, he is forced to go out into the real world to find out the mystery behind all the murders that are connected to the first. The story can be confusing if you're nt following the plot. Is this human or just a robot? Just remember, the prettier or betterlooking guys and gals are surrogates cos the humans are just worse off than the perfect robots (hence 4 stars for visuals cos there's so much eye-candy every corner you turn). What uncovers is a conspiracy to rid of all surrogates in the world. Catch the movie to find out whether all humans perish or all surrogates are exterminated. Nt as awful as I expect it to be, but I've defintely seen better. Also liked the minor emotional connection between Bruce and his wife, which he tries to reach out through her surrogate.

Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs (3d)

A little boy who always wanted to be a scientist grows up & invents a food-making machine. The machine sets off to the sky and he controls the machine from the ground. Hence it rains whatever food he programmes the machine to come up with. This catches the attention of a weather girl who arrives at the town to report the "weather". The mayor soons finds out the invention and makes the scientist famous and acknowledges the scientist and markets the town as a foodie place for all to visit and makes different types of food rain each day. However, as the more orders the machine churns, it gets out of control, creating the biggest food storm that threatens the existence of the town. It is then up to the scientist, the weathergirl and his team to save the town from being buried under food. I admit that where the story lacks in logic, it makes up in imagination. To see food rain down from the sky is fascinating to watch. From steak to jello castle to jelly bears, and of course, meatballs, the movie is only as delicious as having a sundae without hot fudge on it. I do agree that the 3D effect was kinda lost on this movie but some scenes did pop up making it nice and yummy for the audience. There is also a very funny black policeman to look out for in the movie. With no huge names on the production (except for Anna "House Bunny"Faris), I do not think it's such a huge seller in Singapore but surprised that it was no. 1 in US for 2 weeks.

Fame

Fame is nt a dance movie or a musical. However, the story does take place in the school of performing arts and trails the stories of a group of teenagers from their audition to graduation day, from the trials and tribulations, their joy and sorrow while pursuing their dreams in one day making it big. The entirely fresh cast supported by some well-known names as their teachers such as Debbie Allen and Kelsey Grammer gave their best efforts but soemhow failed to pull the heartstrings of the audience (unless u r as emotional as I am). However, the soundtrack is worth checking out. Nice renditions and performances by the cast. A movie to remind us to pursue, and not to give up on, our dreams.

Whiteout

The movie begins when a Russian plane flies over the Antartica and crashes after an internal turmoil and gunfight between the pilots and the passengers. The story then jumps 50 years into the present day where at the base camp of the Antartica, the persons/ workers are preparing to leave base camp before the Antartic winter sets in and plunges them into 6 months of darkness. Kate Bekinsale plays Stecko, a US Marshall who headed south due to personal reasons from a previous assignment where she killed her own corrupt partner. However, her plans to hand in her badge in afew days time was delayed when they find a murdered body. The story becomes a particularly bland and predictable whodunit. However, it is the harsh conditions, the chilling cold winds and snow storms that take the centre stage and grabs your attention when it comes to this movie, making it the star. The dialogue was cliche and nothing else is worth much mention, imo. The revelation of the killer in the end was also anti-climaxed. I also did not like how the villian got his just desserts in the end, totally ridiculous!

Inglourious Basterds

Quentin has delivered yet another piece of work filled with dark humour and quirky characters. Set in German-occupied France, the story is split into 5 parts for ease of viewing, otherwise, the story tends to drag out a fair bit with lengthy conversations. The first story sets the pace by showing how Shosanna, a Jew hiding from the Germans, witnessed her family's execution and escape. The next part brings us to the attention of a group called the Basterds, whose name and reputation strikes fear among the Germans as they infiltrate the German camps and kills them off. Leading the pack, is Aldo played by Brad Pitt. And soon the story gels together when parties like the Basterds & Shosanna plot their plans and revenge to kill off Hitler at a movie premeire. Sounds far-fetched? Well, that Quentin for you. However, he has the knack to even weave in a slightly-touching budding romance admist the heavy-drawn warfare flick. Kudos for the actors, superb cast and acting especially Christoph Waltz's portrayal of the menancing German colonel. The funniest moment was Aldo's italian accent when he tried to sneak into an event with Diane Kruger, who plays an undercover actress. Do also expect a fair bit of right-in-your-face violence Quentin-style.

The Ugly Truth

Katherine Heigel plays a TV producer whose station's ratings are falling. Before axing her show, the station hires Gerald Butler who is a chauvinistic TV presenter of a TV programme "the Ugly truth"to boost ratings. His unique, frank and in-your-face advice on relationship between man & woman draws the ire of hte producer as she relents making low blows and sleaze to gain ratings. They soon make a bet where Gerald will help her attain the man of her dreams or he will quit the station. The rest is predictable as slowly the characters grows onto each other. There are funny moments, my favourite being Katherine wearing the vibrating underwear (gift from Gerald) and attends a work dinner with hilarious effect. That scene reminds me of When Harry met Sally but in this updated version, Katherine Hiegel has sealed the deal that she can execute comedic roles and is truly a star here. The movie does not offer profound insights on the relations of the different sex, has a few cliches but still worth catching. An above average rom-com that garners my 3.5 hearts.
