What I loved most: The Close Encounters of the Third Kind gag
What I really hated: Formulaic
An entertaining enough romp, if rather formulaic. The voices are mostly provided by comedians, and they do a good job with the familiar material. The dialogue is snappy, and there are some really funny gags (gotta love the "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" reference), but otherwise, this is as disposable as they come.

What I loved most: The dives. Duh.
What I really hated: Strange homo-eroticism of the opening scenes
After the rather misleading, very homo-erotic opening scenes, Dive!! turns out to be a sports movie that - surprise! - concentrates on the sport. The young leads give commendable performances, and the story, while following genre conventions, still manages to throw up a few surprises here and there. It loses focus somewhat in the second act, but wins you over again in the tense climactic competition.

What I loved most: Performances from cast
What I really hated: Story meanders at times
This quiet and understated tearjerker hits the right notes without overkill, like director Yamada's skill. While meandering at times, the strong performances and characters still attract, and it all ends off on a rather unexpected, but very human coda. Not his best, but very good nonetheless.

What I loved most: Fast pace
What I really hated: Bad music that BOOMBOOMBOOMs at you
An improvement over The Da Vinci Code in many ways, chief of which is the quicker pace and greater sense of urgency. Oh, and Tom Hanks loses his horrible mullet. It won't stay with you long, but as a piece of disposable entertainment, it serves its function decently.

What I loved most: The subtle, layered acting
What I really hated: The audience that came in expecting something else and was vocally disappointed
WARNING: DO NOT EXPECT A MAINSTREAM MOVIE.
Very subtle, layered piece about an office relationship that never quite goes anywhere. Realistically banal dialogue hides deep emotional currents that reveal themselves in the silences and glances. Lots of work needed from the audience to make inferences and connect the dots, but it's worth the effort and patience. Great performances and effective understated cinematography aid the journey.
It's definitely not mainstream, but neither is it stupidly pretentious. It's... alternative.
So please, do your research before you step into the theatre, and you'll save both your anger at the "absence of story" and my annoyance at you.

What I loved most: It's great both for fans and novices
What I really hated: Can't think of any
J.J. Abrams revives another movie franchise! This series reboot is a real treat for both fans and novices alike, as we get to meet the whole gang and see their new origins (while still respecting and acknowledging the previous canon). Plus, it all happens at breakneck speed, with everyone involved working at the top of their game. It's not just a great Star Trek movie, not just a great sci-fi flick, not just a great action-adventure... It's great, period.
