What I loved most: The random one-liners (mostly from Galifianakis & Helms)
What I really hated: The downbeat beginning which worked against it
It opens unlike a typical comedy - on a downright moody note, in fact. Which, on hindsight, may have made worked against it, because it takes so much longer to warm up. Once it gets started, it goes from setpiece to setpiece, which theoretically should be funny. But in actual fact, I was more amused by the random lines than anything. The cast lack a certain chemistry and were somewhat unconvincing as friends. All in all, some good laughs at moments, but a perfectly disposable comedy otherwise.

What I loved most: Um, it's shot quite well...
What I really hated: The Ridiculously Stupid Plot Twist
Production values are top-notch, and it all starts off intriguingly. But by the halfway mark, the loopholes start showing, and Kwok's normally decent acting becomes progressively over-the-top. Still, it's nothing compared to the Incredibly Ludicrous Reveal that kicks off a pointlessly protracted, histrionic (and unintentionally hilarious) third act - a reveal that's delivered to us in a never-ending speech. By the end, it's all become one huge, gory joke of a movie.

What I loved most: For once, humans are the invaders
What I really hated: The sometimes-ugly animation
Instead of silly wisecracking animals, this animation has a serious anti-war eco-message and delivers it earnestly. While the third act packs a dramatic punch, the movie starts off rather weakly, and the unattractive animation doesn't help. Still, it's a commendable effort, and it's always a good thing to let the kiddies think a little.

What I loved most: Its authenticity
What I really hated: The romantic subplot
The fairy-tale aspects of the frankly unbelievable story are nicely balanced out by the authenticity of everything surrounding it. From the performances to the fight choreography, from the locations to the camerawork, everything feels naturalistic, gritty, down and dirty, rough and tumble. It's the spunky little movie that could, and it certainly has a raw charm about it.

What I loved most: The acting
What I really hated: Rather predictable
A lurid melodrama that feels straight out of a trashy romance novel, the tagline being "Hell hath no fury like a gay king scorned". Despite the predictable developments, everything is kept thankfully pacey, the cast give commendable turns, and it's all very handsomely made (no pun intended).

What I loved most: A scene when Depp walks through Police HQ. Beautiful.
What I really hated: Unconvincing central relationship
Depp is as magnetic as ever, and this is a decently-made film, but pales somewhat in comparison to Mann's past works. The action sequences are stunning, but the supporting characters fade into the background, and the central relationship isn't entirely convincing. There's still magic, it's just not there throughout.
