What I really hated: Can't get enough of this film! Had to see it twice in cinema
This film has an excellent blend of action & comedy. In fact, the romantic subplot between Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway is a surprising delight. Carell is pitch-perfect as Smart Maxwell, and the rest of the cast also contributed significantly, including the cameo appearance by Bill Murray.
I have to admit that the script is barely passable. A thin plot with a super-dramatic storyline that does not flow very well, especially towards the end.
However, the lacklustre script aside, this is a throughly engaging film musical. What makes this film tick for me is the presentation: Lovely art direction/set decoration, ravishing costumes and make-ups, appealing musical numbers, good editing, and fine performances by all. In fact, much of characters emotions, feelings & thoughts are effectively reflected in the songs.
If you can overlook the schmaltzy script like I did, you will enjoy this cinematic celebration of Getai. Or else, you will be put off by the storyline.
