The Dark Knight

What I loved most: The late Heath Ledger's performance as the iconic Joker

What I really hated: A bit too long...

The tone of the movie was set right at the beginning. The robbery scene masterminded by who else, but the crafty Joker, was cleverly planned. Ledger's performance as the Joker was immaculate. If there is one thing to improve on, i would suggest Joker laugh more. I found that he did not give out his traditional laughs more during the course of the movie. I was bemused that HK controversial star Edison Chan actually took on a role which reduced him to a mere 1 second 'extra'. Although Maggie lose out a bit in the looks department to Katie, the former's acting proved superior. Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman gave assured performaces and had calming influences in the movie. Christian Bale also had an impressive showing. I personally feel the movie could have featured more on Joker, taking out the 'Two-faced' role. There were no evidence to show that Joker was eventually caught in the end, so we might see the return of the iconic baddy in the third instalment. But sadly, the late Heath Ledger will not be around to reprise the role he made his own. I wait with hugh anticipation for the next Batman, and hopefully, it can live up to its billing, the same as 'The Dark Knight'.

The Strangers

What I loved most: Liv Tyler

What I really hated: everything else....

I am not so sure what to write about this movie because i fell asleep for about 15min somewhere near the 3/4 part of the movie. The movie started off rather promisingly keeping us in suspense. Then the tried and tested stuff came in. The scare parts were not anything we had not seen before. The story was a big letdown. I don't understand why the two leads didn't just run away from the house instead of staying inside after they know they were surrounded by strangers trying to kill them. They should have run for help as far as possible away, and tried their luck looking for people living nearby or driving past. The only bright spot in this disappointing movie is the performance of Liv Tyler. The actress who made a name of herself in the Lord of the Ring outshone Scott Speedman and her performance might even win her an oscar nomination if the story was better. As a horror movie, I can safely say it did not scare me one bit until the last 1 second of the movie. That is when Liv Tyler woke up from her death to scare us movie-goers.

Wanted

What I loved most: Angelina Jolie

What I really hated: Poor storyline

I had expected more for this movie. The opening sequences were pretty impressive but after that, the movie went downhill. The only thing that i can remember after i step out of the cinema is the sight of Angelina Jolie's naked backview. Brad Pitt is such a lucky guy to have got himself a woman the figure and lips of Jolie! Back to the movie, Morgan Freeman was a diasppointment as he did not fully exploit his role. And really, I prefer 'Shoot 'Em Up' which was shown quite recently and with a similar genre as 'Wanted'. If not for Angelina Jolie, i would have given this movie a 1or2 star instead of 3.

Get Smart

What I loved most: Very funny

What I really hated: Not enough Anne !!

This is definitely the best comedy i've watched this year. I would rank it as the top 3 best comedies of all time in my portfoilio. And i would say it has a lot to do with the cast. Steve Carrell was at his best doing what he is capable of. Anne Hathaway was stunning in this movie, and she is now one of my favourite actress besides Jessica Alba and Reese Wetherspoon. It's a shame there is no fighting scenes between The Rock and Great Khali. Can you imagine The Rock giving The Giant Khali a rock bottom? I was entertained throughout and if you still hav'nt caught the movie, and with it almost running out in cinemas, i would suggest you get the dvd. It is most certainly well-worth money spent!

Hancock

What I loved most: Will Smith

What I really hated: Poor storyline, no climax

This movie was one of my most anticipated this summer because of one of my favourite actor Will Smith. But i was quite disappointed after watching it. I dare say if not for Will Smith, the movie will be a BIG FLOP! The name 'Will Smith' helped carry the movie all over the world. With Ironman, Hulk, Hellboy and Batman all opening this busy summer, Hancock did the Super-hero genre no favour at all. I do not like the fact that Charlize Theron was also the same kind as Will Smith. It was a very poor 'Twist' in the movie. But i do like the part when Hancock was slowly getting loved by the public. Overall, if you are still deciding whether to watch the movie, i would suggest you rent a dvd instead. It's not worth spending 10 bucks watching in a cinema.

Red Cliff Part 1

What I loved most: Excellent dialogue

What I really hated: Too draggy

With a stellar cast like acclaimed director John Woo, multiple award winner Tony Leung, dashing Takeshi Kaneshiro, versatile actors from China and the gorgeous Lin Chiling, the movie could well be one of Asia's best movies. And after watching it myself, I can safely say it did not disappoint. I feel the first 2/3 of the movie is pretty entertaining as there were quite a number of funny conversations between the actors. But the final 1/3 of the show prevented me from giving it a Five-Star rating. The battle scenes were too draggy. Some of them were unnecessary in my opinion. As usual, Tony Leung gave an assured performance as always and Takeshi showed the funny side of Zhuge Liang. Lin Chiling performed relatively well considering this was her first foray into acting. I was quite annoyed when I the love scene involving Tony Leung and Lin Chiling was cut halfway. I think it was censored for this movie to be rated PG, instead of maybe NC-16. It is disrespectful not only to us audience, but also to the actors, especially Lin Chiling. Overall, the movie could be better if it was to be 10-15min shorter. I hope the 2nd part of the movie slated to be released early next year would be a grandstand finish to an exceptional good movie.
