The Dark Knight

What I loved most: Solid storyline, acting and actions

What I really hated: A bit draging storyline.

The Dark Knight is the movie to watch if you plan to watch just one summer superhero movie this year. From start to finish, the film delivers solid storyline with superb acting and action scenes. While Batman Begins is more like an introduction to the franchise, The Dark Knight is an even better sequel to its prequel which can stand on its own. The film's storyline focuses on Bruce Wayne aka Batman's (CHRISTIAN BALE) fight against Gotham City's villain The Joker (the late HEATH LEDGER in an Oscar worthy performance). Apart from his nemesis, Wayne's triangle relationships with his old flame Rachel Dawes (MAGGIE GYLLENHAAL) and her new love interest Harvey Dent (AARON ECKHART) make the storyline even interesting - the plots thicken just when you think the film is almost over. Heath Ledger's acting really over shadow the film's other casts and could easily be remembered as the best villain role ever. A must watch film for this summer.

Hancock

What I loved most: The film's attempt of trying to be different

What I really hated: Will Smith's attempt of trying to be a superhero

Jumping on the bandagon of this summer's superhero movies, Hancok is a superhero film with a different. For a start, Hancok (WILL SMITH) himself is a superhero with bad image and reputation - he is an alcoholic, homeless and would caused damage to public properties that would overshadows all his heroic deed. Looks like everybody in LA loves to hate him until he re-branded himself with the help of a PR executive Ray Embrey (JASON BATEMAN) who is indebted to him for saving his life. However, when he was introduced to Ray's wife Mary (CHARLIZE THERON), his new found fame and life is in danger since there's something about Mary that nobody knows. Unlike other big budget superhero movies, Hancock is quite simple and pale in comparison to the others. Nevertheless, some of the film's CGI effect are jaw dropping and memorable. There are also the occasional feel good and laughing moments, thanks to Will Smith for his antic. It is such a waste to caste Academy award winner Charlize Theron in this film since her presence does not have much impact - her role can always be given to any budding actress and not necessarily to an A List actress like her. However, both Smith and Theron has the right on screen chemistry when their role getting romantic to each other. If you are a superhero movie fan, you might be dissapointed with Hancock - it is a not so good job superhero film but still OK.

Long Khong 2

What I loved most: The Poster

What I really hated: Its black magic galore, too graphical gorish scenes.

I have watched Long Khong in 2006 but yet to watch Art of the Devil, so the title of this film is rather confusing to me. Anyway, I can still relates the film with Long Khong since some of the cast are similar and the story also inter related. However, the story line is rather confusing due to weakneses in the film's story development and editing. The film revolves around Panor (NAPAKPAPAH NAKPRASIT aka MAMEE) the devil worshipper teacher in Long Khong who are now hospitalised in a mental institution. Her soul was then chased away from her body using black magic by a revengeful family so that her body can be used to host the soul of their dead daughter. The family's joy in welcoming back their dead family member is short lived when Panor's soul return back to her body and seek revenge on them using the black magic that she has been practising ever since she was a child. Things get complicated when a man (NAMO TUNGKUMNERD) who is also obsessed with black magic is hunting for the Three-Eyed Devil that lives within Panor. For those like me who have watched Long Khong, the film is rather confusing in the begining - is the film a sequel or prequel? The idea of using someone's body who is hated by all in the family to host the soul of a dead family member loved by all is rather absurd and amusing - how are they going to face someone that they hated so much everyday in person eventhough the soul is someone that they love? Just like its predecessor Long Khong, the film's gory part is too graphical and at time over the top. In conclusion, the film is a good watch for horror movie fans with plentyfull of black magic galore. The film's message at the end is simple and universal - black magic will always haunt you once you started using it.

Made Of Honour

What I loved most: Insight into the Scotish culture and its country side scenes

What I really hated: Predictable ending

Don't expect much from this rom-coms since it uses the same formula with its earlier predecessors. The film is in fact like a cross between Julia Robert's My Best Freind's Wedding and Runaway Bride - Hollywood has no more fresh idea I guess or just want to play safe by using the same formula in their productions. In this film, Tom (PATRICK DEMPSEY) is a bed hopping playboy who realised it too late that the woman he really loves is his best freind from university, Hannah (MICHELE MONAGHAN). When he was asked by Hannah to be her Maid of Honour for her wedding to a Duke from Scotland, Tom set a plan to stop the wedding at all cost ala Julia Roberts in My Best Freind Wedding. He even arrived at the Scotish country side chappel riding a horse, just like Julia Roberts did in Runaway Bride... The film ending is rather predictable - the damsel chose the bed hoping playboy to be his partner rather then marrying a Duke. I would prefer if the film ending would be different. Acting wise, both the leads have the right on screen chemistry and the supporting casts are also memorable. Despite being demonised by Hollywood in this film, I found that the Scotish culture and country side potrayed in this film is rather interesting - perhaps the saving grace for the film I would say. Strictly for rom-coms fan, skip this film if you have watched My Best Freind Wedding.

Someone Behind You

What I loved most: No long haired ghost - finaly!

What I really hated: Slow moving & dreadful - I fall asleep in between

"Someone Behind You" is another Korean horror that jumping on the Asian horror flicks bandwagon. Just like most other Asian horror films, the storyline of this film is based on Asian folktales but set in modern times - about a curse that plague a family for generations. The main character in this film, Ga-in (YUN JIN-SEO) is a high school student who witnessed her aunt being brutally killed on her wedding day by another aunt. It was later reveal by her parents that this could be due to a hereditary curse that plague the family for generations whereby one person in each generation will die at the hands of two persons who are closest to them. Ga-in is then predicted as the one who will inherit the curse, resulting in her being constantly chased by death with attempted murders by her family and freinds. Together with her boyfiend Heon-joong (LEE-KI WOO) and a new found friend who suffers the same fate Suk-min (PARK-KI WONG), Ga-in searches for the truth behind the curse despite being warned by Suk-min to "trust no one - not your family, your friends, or even yourself". Will she succeed in breaking the curse? Watch the movie to find out the answer but be warned that there are plenty of gorish scenes in this film such as the murder in the hospital ward scene. The film's pace also rather slow for me - I fall asleep in between the draging scenes. Acting wise, the lead actress succeed in her potrayal as a traumatised young woman while the the actors also do their part convincingly. Watch out for the twist at the film's ending.

The Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian

What I loved most: Reepicheep the mouse and Trumpkin the dwarf

What I really hated: Prince Caspian

The Chronicles of Narnia: Price Caspian is such a let down, thanks to the title character himself who is one demensional and boring. In this second instalment of the Narnia chronicles, the Pevensie siblings - Peter (WILLIAM MOSELEY), Susan (ANNA POPPLEWELL), Edmund (SKANDAR KEYNES) and Lucy(GEORGIE HENLEY) are transported back into Narnia one year later when Prince Caspian (BEN BARNES) summoned them by blowing Susan's magic horn in an attempt to save himself from being killed. The siblings found that 1,000 years have passed in Narnia after they left and it is now being ruled by the bloodthirsty and power hungry General Miraz (SERGIO CASTELITTO), uncle to Prince Caspian the true heir to Narnia who is now in exile. With the absence of Aslan (voiced by LIAM NELSON), the children must work in hand with the Prince and other creatures in Narnia to save it from being destroyed by the evil General Miraz. The storyline of this film is smooth flowing and easy to follow for me, despite of missing its predecessor (Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe). Acting wise, Ben Barnes as the central character to this film is a big let down while the rest of the characters such as the Pervensie siblings are not well developed. However, the saving grace come in the form of the animated characters like Reepicheep the mouse and Trumpkin the dwarf that provide the cutesy comic relief throughout the film. The film's CGI is also quite common by today standard, nothing to shout about despite it is being a big budget production. Overall, this film is quite a dissapointment to me.
