Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

The latest installment to this franchise was just fine. The acting was fine, story was fine, visuals were above average and overall...fine. There is nothing special or different from what we have seen before in its predecessors. Despite so, i admit that the characterisation is better in this film than all the others. Just as in Spiderman 3, this film seeks also to include the protagnists struggling with moral and responsibility dilemma. Depp was surprisingly not as good as before; Knightley, Bloom, Rush and even Davy Jones outshone Depp in terms of portrayal of the character. Perhaps Depp has gone a bit giddy from all that swaying and sashaying.

Just Follow Law

This film turned out better than what i expected it to be. Jack Neo makes a huge comeback from his past sleepy hits with his satrical and comedic outlook on office politics in Singapore. The film is kept light hearted and feels close to the heart as it really explores some of the dilemmas and problems faced by typical Singaporeans, blue or white collar alike. Throw in some superb and fine acting from the likes of Fann Wong, Gurmit Singh and Brandon Wong, and you have a splendid blend of humour and poignancy that sticks to you during the duration of the film. Neo always have a knack with tugging at people's heartstrings, though it is not as outward as before, this film does carry a subtle sadness in it which is heartfelt. This might not be the best local production ever, but it certainly is a "gooder" one.

Spider-Man 3

The newest installation to the spiderman franchise proves much to be desired. For a 2.5 hr movie, the story is simpy too long, draggy even at points. It seems as if the producers are trying to cramp too many things into one movie. The end product is far from satisfying; as compared to the other two movies before, spiderman 3 undoubtedly lacks lustre. Macguire and Dunst's performance leaves much to be desired, their portrayal of the characters lack the energy and hype present before. But the reason why this film deserve a three star is James Franco. Armed with the right blend of innocence and evil, his character stood up above the others and is a character that you will love and hate at the same time. Apart from the fantastic visuals and Franco, there really ain't much to look forward to in this film.

Bridge To Terabithia

One can't enter the cinema without a skeptical mind after watching the misleading trailer. As a big fan of the novel, this film turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Staying faithful to the novel, the film progress at just the right pace and the scenes were exactly what i imagined them to be. Thankfully, the producers did not go into a CGI effect overdrive; the sweet, innocent friendship between the two leads still takes the centre stage and the leads do have eons of chemistry between them which makes the film very enjoyable. The ending of the film was tragic but poignant at the same time which leaves a warm resonance after i left the cinema. This film is in all, a powerful and compelling story about friendships, growing up and losses, which has the ability to touch peoples' hearts, just as Katherine Paterson did with the novel.

P.s.

This film's largest draw is its fine cast; Laura Linney is immensely attractive and does her role justice with her fine acting skills while Topher Grace is charming and cute. This film isn't just all about love and love and more love; we are looking at a film that explores the notion of memories and of course, second chances. The director did not just scratch the surface of these two themes; he explores them with depth through intricate characters, taken on by actors with fiery performances. Linney is definitely on the top of her game in this one; her role as a confused, struggling woman deserves my utmost sympathy. Every film has its drawback and for this film, it is most probably the slow pacing and somewhat abstract dialogue that goes on. Other than that, this is a brilliant film which is good for some self reflection on our own love life. Get it on DVD (should be worth it).

Eternal Summer

This film is as simple as it gets: it explores the interaction between its three protagonists as they grow from kids, to teenagers, to young adults and finally to adults. I just have to give applauds to the director for his detailed and careful observations on the process of growing up. The events that unfolds in the film are so seemingly alike our own youthful days, that at the end of it all, i can sigh at the lost of my own youthful times and the innocence that comes with it. This film hinges largely on two main ideas, friendship and relationship, which are brilliantly played out between the three lead actors. The film chronicles their process of growing up and it is marvelling to see how they struggle to maintain their own desires and the reality of the situation (which would most probably be appplicable to ourselves as well). The scenenery were captured beautifully on screen and though the film is rather slow in pace, it doesn't degenerate into pure boredom; in fact, it keeps getting better and better. The gay theme might be a turn off for some people but this theme was handled very tactfully by the director to bring out the essence of this film. Watch it and you will know it.
