In an alternate dystopian world years into the future, nation states Euromerica and New Shanghai are battling for supremacy, and simple factory worker, Doug Quaid (Farrell) is caught in the middle though he is unaware of it. All Quaid wants is to visit Mars, but his violent nightmares leads him to suspect that he is a spy, and his current persona is something crafted for him via memory-implants. However, the question becomes, how much of it is real, and how much of it is a lie, and it is soon apparent that Quaid realises their importance.
