A pale and lonely dark-eyed boy, out of place in the suntanned Burbank world of his youth, filmmaker Tim Burton refused to yield to the cookie-cutter homogeneity demanded by suburbia (and later by Disney), translating his alienation into a dark and highly personal vision that would resonate resoundingly with movie audiences.
