A romantically-challenged morning show producer (Katherine Heigl) is embroiled in a series of outrageous tests by her chauvinistic correspondent to prove his theories on relationships and help her find love. His clever ploys, however, lead to an unexpected result.
What I loved most: Commical points about the opposite sex
Sometimes, truth are indeed ugly. A great film for all couples and single, as the film makes them re-think again what make the opposite sex ticks. You may agree or disagree with some of the points the movie presented, but overall, you cannot deny that you will walk out the cinema with an increase in knowledge about the other sex. A great direction by the film makers to present the points in such a comical and light-hearted way. So...what exactly makes you love the other one? =)

Unfortunately for her, love is complicated and soon she has to decide which man she's falling for. I mean, how average is that? There are many other movies with similar plotline like this. Thankfully, The Ugly Truth does have amazing jokes and laugh-out-loud moments in its 96-minute duration therefore it's no wonder why people will love this movie. Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigl are a good couple, I think. They just look so romantic to each other, haha. Too bad, The Ugly Truth is a PG-13 movie with 'strong language' therefore making it a 'R' movie with 'NC16' rating in Singapore. But if you can watch it, be sure to sit this one in. Worth the laugh of your weekend.

His unique, frank and in-your-face advice on relationship between man & woman draws the ire of hte producer as she relents making low blows and sleaze to gain ratings. They soon make a bet where Gerald will help her attain the man of her dreams or he will quit the station. The rest is predictable as slowly the characters grows onto each other. There are funny moments, my favourite being Katherine wearing the vibrating underwear (gift from Gerald) and attends a work dinner with hilarious effect. That scene reminds me of When Harry met Sally but in this updated version, Katherine Hiegel has sealed the deal that she can execute comedic roles and is truly a star here. The movie does not offer profound insights on the relations of the different sex, has a few cliches but still worth catching. An above average rom-com that garners my 3.5 hearts.

What I really hated: Overbearing male protagonist
"The Ugly Truth" is a fallacious and spurious analysis of the dynamics in a relationship. "The Ugly Truth" is a fallacious and spurious analysis of the dynamics in a relationship. It propagates a rather clinical and detached view on the concept of love though some may feel this is just a good and harsh dose of cynicism that quixotic couples need. Most of the 'insights' to what makes for a good relationship comes from Mike Chadway (Gerard Butler), a smug and obnoxious TV personality who dishes out psychobabble and relationship advice like he is a love guru. He encounters his nemesis in the form of TV producer Abby Richter, a neurotic and uptight lady who creates a checklist based on her ideal partner. They strike a deal and Mike goes on to assist Abby to snag her dreamy neighbour (Eric Winter) in return for her cooperation in work. Being a rom-com, it cannot escape the formulaic treatment and prosaic ending so it is not much of a surprise when both characters, initially at loggerheads with each other find true love. The predictability of the conclusion should warrant a good dose of cynicism itself. Furthermore, it is difficult to develop an affection for both characters as they are just so sour and prickly, not to mention the lack of redeeming qualities apart from their comely countenance. Heigl tried her best to connect with her co-star Butler and it shows. However, the lack of chemistry is due in large part to Butler's perfunctory and nondescript performance, making for a downright vapid and insipid couple. The supporting male lead Eric Winter only serves the function of eye-candy judging by the fact that he is gratuitously shirtless for most of his scenes. The ribaldry and raunchy sexual references would make any self-respecting person cringe in embarrassment and does little to boost the slender plot. In short, this film is far from the truth but it is indeed ugly.
