Cinema Online's Review Back to top

Oh my God, this has got to be 'Corniest Film of 2007' by far.

Extremely self-masturbatory with a pubescent story-telling, "The Seeker: The Dark Is Rising" comes across as a flighty fantasy flick with no real substance.

Adapted to screen from Susan Cooper's beloved sequence of "The Dark Is Rising" novels, the movie is about young Will Stanton (Drew Tyler Bell), an assumingly normal 14-year-old who discovers that he is the answer to the age-old war between the Light and the Dark. Given the name The Seeker, Will is secretly endowed with special abilities that take him through time and space in search of The Signs which, when gathered, will forever purify the Earth of the forces of the Dark.

I'm not sure why book-to-film adaptations fail miserably for most and sadly, this is one that didn't win the battle either. The story lingers over Will's raging teenage hormone rather than the duty at hand, making it look like a high-school drama more than anything else.

Bestowed with gifted powers, Will could only think of using it to impress a girl and complains throughout like a whiny 5-year-old who didn't get his candy. At times, you just feel like slapping him.

The cinematography was just as atrocious as the director can't seem to make up his mind about which angle to take. It felt like a complete mess.

On the contrary, I heard the book itself is fabulous and this movie does not do it justice. It is a story written to cater for children so adults may find a hard time gluing themselves to their seats. Still, the fact that it is a children's fantasy flick is not an excuse in my book. Other children's tales like the "Harry Potter" series have garnered acclaim and adulation from young and mature alike so I shouldn't be lenient with this one.

There's plenty other choices so move along, kids.
