Highsociety Childcare with Scarlett Johansson

What I loved most: The film's social satire

What I really hated: Stereotyping till the end

The Nanny Diaries was unexpectedly both funny and sad. Scarlett Johansson brought genuine warmth to her role of a bright student who decides to be a high society nanny in order to find herself. Other than the fact that I found it hard to believe that any self-respecting smart young woman with a hard working single parent mom, would voluntarily wait hand and foot on a spoiled rich woman (whose most tiring moment of a day is getting in and out of a limo) a tad unbelievable, Johansson was sweet and endearing. Laura Linney, was akin to Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada, in her intelligent portrayal of a character who could have easily been one dimensional. But the person who really stole the show was the adorable tyke, when he tells Johansson to never leave him, I swear I felt a tear. The Nanny Diaries was a witty and humane look at a certain side of high class society, with its pretense, superficiality and sincerity. Unfortunately the film tended to generalize but at the end of the day..it may not have been as entertaining had it not. Money really cannot buy happiness...who knew??

A case study~ lol

What I loved most: Though provoking issues

What I really hated: the way how nannies are being treated

To be honest, I had no idea what "athropology" meant before I watched this movie but after this movie, I understood it. It's funny how the movie started in a form of narration about some ancient tribal groups and how it evolved to the modern day living in US and how ppl are being classified. And that is how 'anthropology' comes into picture but it means 'the study of humanity' and in this case, it means social developments & issues. Over here, a fresh college graduate is trying to look for a job related to her field of studies and was offered a job as a nanny. Something which she hasn't done before and never thought about trying but opportunity came to her just like that. The story revolve around a rookie trying to experience life in the city and realised that it wasn't easy working with kids. It's ridiculous how Mrs X pass down so many rules & regulations for the nanny and her kid. To me, I feel Mrs X was absusing her lifestyle, enjoying the luxuries of being a rich man's wife attending parties, spa, manicure. Her love for her husband doesn't compansate on her neglectness for her son. It seems as though she's yearning attention from her husband and refuse to give any to her son. It makes no sense here and Annie was also probably wondering why Mr & Mrs X would quarrel every now & then and it made young Grayer insecure and it'd be Annie's job to comfort the little boy. Before she even realised it, she develop an attachment with the boy and I teared up at the part where Mrs X sort of sacked her off after discovering her husband taken a fancy for that girl and that Grayer kept chasing after the car which Annie was in. The boy kept shouting 'Nanny, nanny!" Then she realised she was paid peanuts and do what any normal human being would and that's letting her feelings out in front of a teddy bear which was instilled with a camera. The hot 'Human Torch' guy plays a very very minor role here as not much focus was put in this story. It's mainly focusing about Annie's study on athropology and I guess she was glad she experienced that. It kind of reminds of Devil Wear Prada in a sense where Mrs X & the Fashion Chief Editor is kinda similiar, in their 'indifferent' & 'unfeeling' way without considering the feelings of the protaganist. Btw, the umbrella thing is probably taken off from "Mary Poppins"?

Inane Diaries

A promising opening featuring some original and humorous scenes drifted into a sometime mawkish drama, as though the director could not decide to make a comedy romance or a coming of age movie. At the end of the film we are reminded that this is a diary that logs a great learning experience, however, it is little more than "money doesn't guarantee happiness" so the intellectual message of this film shouldn't be the reason for going to see it. That reason is Scarlett Johansson.
