From the creator of the Oscar-winning "Sideways", "The Descendants" is a sometimes humorous, sometimes poignant journey for Matt King (George Clooney) an indifferent husband and father of two girls, who is forced to re-examine his past and embrace his future when his wife suffers a boating accident off Waikiki, Hawaii. The event leads to a reconciliation with his young daughters, while Matt wrestles with a decision to sell the family's land. Under different pressure from various factions, Matt King then finds out that his wife was having an affair
What I loved most: George Clooney in his best performance EVER
What I really hated: a little too laidback...?
You will appreciate your family and its history much more after watching, in me opinion, one of the most picturesque, totally laidback but ultimately rewarding dysfunctional family drama to come in a long time! To my surprise, The Descendants ( despite the banal title! ) is actually a very well acted and most entertaining drama about an emotionally distant guy trying to re-connect with his daughters after his wife met with a boating accident and is left in a vegetative state. One top of having to make the most difficult and painful decision of his life, a certain skeleton started to crawl out of the proverbial closet! That's when the real begins and then this strangely entertaining film then jaunts along on a merrily and leisurely pace as though held swayed by the lust and balmy wamth of Hawaii's intoxicatingly laidback attitude. And George Clooney's role as the blur dad is at once, moving, gently humourous and subtly restrained is truly and possibly his best performance EVER. You will laugh, winced at his frustration and bewilderment and at the same time, feel the depth of his pain and loss. Special mention to the rest of the excellent cast especially Shailene Woodley who held her own as the feisty older daughter. Alexander took his time to make this make after his last acclaimed drama, Sideways and the wait was worth it. And after all the trials and tribulation, the final scenes as the credits roll is just...perfect. PS : Jean Dujardin from the Artist has some real competition here!
