Based on the 1983 Susan Hill novel of the same name, this supernatural thriller tells the tale of Arthur Kipps (Daniel Radcliffe), a lawyer who is forced to leave his young son and travel to a remote village to attend to the affairs of the recently deceased owner of Eel Marsh House. Working alone in the old mansion, Kipps begins to uncover the town's tragic and tortured secrets and his fears escalate when he discovers that local children have been dying under mysterious circumstances. When those closest to him become threatened by the vengeful woman in black, Kipps must find a way to break the cycle of terror.
What I loved most: Great landscapes from an era gone by
What I really hated: Slow moving
A young lawyer who recently lost his wife and has a young son cared for by a nanny is not doing very well at work. He is sent by his boss to a God-forsaken place to wrap up some legal matters of a client. The people there are weird and spooky because of a vengeful ghost who causes children to take their own lives. The scenery is drab and gloomy, making the atmosphere very haunting. In the end we get a showdown between the lawyer and the ghost. Average ending.

Clearly, it's hard to veer away from a movie character people have grown seeing (and loving you) in. But in this movie, Radcliffe showed that he can mature from that "boy-who-lived" stigma. His acting has matured as well, but he needs more room on scenes where being afraid/frightened is required. This suspense-thriller started with 3 young girls suddenly jumping off their window - as if possessed or hypnotized. Kipps (Radcliffe) is a struggling lawyer who needs to prove himself, and a longing husband to his wife who died when she gave birth to their child. He then went on to a remote village where he unleashes the story of a vengeful ghost - a scorned woman - who is terrorizing the locals. Terrifying scenes were unprecedented - which I liked the most. Unlike any other films of this genre where you would know when the ghost or the next scary scene would appear haunting you. Here, you would have no time to get that blanket to cover your eyes (if you're in bed) or cover your eyes using your boyfriend's arm. No gorey scenes, no special effects. Just pure imaginative scare. And the ending was great, I think. Was the mystery solved? It's up to you to guess. Until now, it keeps me thinking. 4 out of 5.
