As the Spanish Civil War rages on outside, an internal war rages on inside: in a circus. "The Last Circus" is a juxtaposition of stories between the outside world and the circus world, to show that every great battle is brought about by the basest of nature, which is the desire for love or power. The story begins with a "Happy" circus clown, who, recruited forcefully by the Militia, ends up carrying out a bloodbath with a machete against the National soldiers while still wearing his clown costume. Many years later, Javier, son of the clown in the Militia, finds work as the Sad Clown in a circus where he meets an outlandish cast of strange characters such as the Human Cannonball, the Elephant Tamer or a quarrelsome couple of dog trainers. Here he also crosses paths for the first time with Sergio, who plays the role of the "Happy" clown, but is brutish and abusive. The both of them soon engage in a battle to the death to win the love of the most beautiful woman in the circus.
