Entertaining for the Young

What I loved most: Aliens' skills

What I really hated: Race Slowed Down

by Cliffhanger It started off quite well, arousing my curiosity about the aliens. But as the movie progressed, it became a drag. And the rest was predictable. Very predictable. Entertaining movie for the young or young at heart. Still enjoyable. Still worth the price of the ticket. I'm beginning to like The Rock Dwayne Johnson. He should become as popular as Arnold Schwarzenegger, provided he does not write and direct his own movies. Storyline is very predictable. Pacing slows down. Action sequence still enjoyable. Sound good too, with good surround effects.

Cinema Online's Review Back to top

Being a remake of 70's hit "Escape To Witch Mountain" (which some say was one of the best things that happened post-Walt Disney), there is some anticipation for this new treatment starring that man The Rock.

The adventure involves taxi driver Jack Bruno (Dwayne Johnson a.k.a. The Rock) and UFO expert Dr. Alex Friedman (Carla Gugino, last seen as Sally Jupiter in "Watchmen") who both protect two siblings with supernatural powers - Sara (Anna Sophia Robb) and Seth (Alexander Ludwig) - from the evil Henry Burke (Ciáran Hinds) who wants to manipulate them to his advantage.

Acting-wise, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson has done yet another entertaining job. He has such a great presence in all his films. However the performance from the two kids are rather ordinary and there isn't much to make them stand out memorably.

"Race To Witch Mountain" isn't the kind of movie that will get you racing to the ticketing counter but it is a very passable family film full of action, adventure and a little bit of comedy.

It'll be interesting to see if there are any more sequels from this, as the 1975 original had two more follow-ups - "Return From Witch Mountain" (1978) and "Beyond Witch Mountain" (1982). If that happens, they ought to keep the wrestling star but find more screen-worthy actors and actresses to surround him.
