Fun Movie

What I loved most: Amusing scene of pet parrot

What I really hated: Jason Biggs stars as Dan is not GAY

This is a comedy movie must see! The first 5 mins could be boring. But you must pay attention as this is a take up point & after that you will laugh your way out to the end.

Cinema Online's Review Back to top

It would be easy to dismiss this film as another bland, unfunny romantic comedy. What if I told you the film's original title was supposed to be "Ghost Bitch"?

That's exactly what the film aims for: laughs aplenty, with an offbeat style and wacky characters that interact in situations that are just unbelievable but heaps of fun all the same. "Over Her Dead Body" will certainly not make it as a classic the way "Ghost" did, but it doesn't matter. If you want a brainless movie with plenty of eye candy and lots of laughs, this is just perfect.

The plot is admittedly thin and audiences can see through all the twists and tricks the filmmakers try to incorporate. The members of the cast are the real reason the film doesn't absolutely suck. Familiar face Paul Rudd is wonderful as the morose Henry, whose fiancée Kate dies on their wedding day in a freak accident. Rudd's Henry is genuinely heartbroken, unable to move on a year after Kate's death, while his eccentric sister Chloe (Lindsay Sloane) tries desperately to bring him out of his funk.

Chloe decides to get psychic Ashley (Lake Bell) to contact Kate from the afterlife and tell Henry that Kate wants him to move on. Bell is the real star of the show: she's awkward, a little zany and has some of the best quips and one-liners in the entire film, delivering them with ease and great comedic timing. She reminds me of a gawky teenager who uses sarcasm as a defence mechanism – hilarious! When she gets closer to Henry, Kate's ghost tries to intervene, making Ashley's life hell by keeping her up all night and following her around everywhere, which sets up some truly side-splitting scenes where Ashley just looks crazy yelling at thin air (she's the only one who can see Kate's ghost).

Eva Longoria is delightful as the bitchy and abhorrent ghostly ex-fiancée Kate, unable to let Henry go due to her jealousy. There are some cheap laughs here and there when Kate tries to scare Ashley with ghostly special effects and "Exorcist"-style voices. However, Longoria isn't as gorgeous in the film as she normally appears on TV – in fact, she's rather funny looking. Perhaps it's the makeup or the unsuitable hair colour they've given her in the film, but she does look a bit off.

Finally, Jason Biggs is his usual self, having apparently not moved on from his "American Pie" days. He plays Ashley's catering partner Dan who is also her secret admirer of five years, pretending to be gay so he can remain close to her without her knowing his true feelings. Come on! Personally, I feel the Dan character and the whole subplot surrounding him were completely unnecessary to the film and frankly, left quite a few loose ends hanging about, which were hastily tied up at the end in an unbelievable, 'cincai' way.

There's nothing much to say about the special effects which were quite amateurish by today's standards, and the cinematography was just average. The script, while cheesy and a bit far-fetched, was absolutely hilarious and fun, guaranteeing laugh-out-loud moments. Just don't expect anything more than that and you will definitely enjoy this movie.
