Having appeared previously with supporting roles in several films and a regular role as a college student on the CBS sitcom "Pearl" (1996-97), Lucy Liu skyrocketed to popularity in 1998 as the icy, somewhat malicious Ling Woo on Fox's acclaimed "Ally McBeal". David E Kelley, who had originally auditioned Liu for the role of Nelle Porter (played by Portia de Rossi), specifically wrote the part of Ling Woo for the alluring raven-haired actress. She injected a good bit of fire into the program, a showing that led to her five-episode recurring commitment being extended to a regular part.
