Is it Long Khong 2 or Art of Devil 3?

What I loved most: The Poster

What I really hated: Its black magic galore, too graphical gorish scenes.

I have watched Long Khong in 2006 but yet to watch Art of the Devil, so the title of this film is rather confusing to me. Anyway, I can still relates the film with Long Khong since some of the cast are similar and the story also inter related. However, the story line is rather confusing due to weakneses in the film's story development and editing. The film revolves around Panor (NAPAKPAPAH NAKPRASIT aka MAMEE) the devil worshipper teacher in Long Khong who are now hospitalised in a mental institution. Her soul was then chased away from her body using black magic by a revengeful family so that her body can be used to host the soul of their dead daughter. The family's joy in welcoming back their dead family member is short lived when Panor's soul return back to her body and seek revenge on them using the black magic that she has been practising ever since she was a child. Things get complicated when a man (NAMO TUNGKUMNERD) who is also obsessed with black magic is hunting for the Three-Eyed Devil that lives within Panor. For those like me who have watched Long Khong, the film is rather confusing in the begining - is the film a sequel or prequel? The idea of using someone's body who is hated by all in the family to host the soul of a dead family member loved by all is rather absurd and amusing - how are they going to face someone that they hated so much everyday in person eventhough the soul is someone that they love? Just like its predecessor Long Khong, the film's gory part is too graphical and at time over the top. In conclusion, the film is a good watch for horror movie fans with plentyfull of black magic galore. The film's message at the end is simple and universal - black magic will always haunt you once you started using it.

Cinema Online's Review Back to top

A tale of a vengeful teacher, Panor, who was cursed and tortured by a Thai family in order to bring back the soul of a dead loved one. Angered, her soul finds its way back into her body and starts inflicting unimaginable pain on the family members. Add to that a man whose greed for black magic drives him on a dead-end hunt for the Third-Eye God, a third eye that holds the power to grant anyone who possesses it unlimited power and knowledge in black magic.

The amount of pain seen in this movie is enough to last me a lifetime. With all the screams, blood and gore, one would simply be exhausted by just watching this poor excuse of a film. Having watched the first "Long Khong", I had expected to see a continuation from it. But instead, I'm given the impression that it's a prequel to the first film instead. But then again, the movie is entitled "Long Khong 2". Hmmm...

The cast for the movie was probably the only decent aspect of this film. I felt that every actor and actress had played their part well, if only in so far as the 'torture' scenes are concerned - especially the scenes in which they were screaming in pain with tears in their eyes. It made me cringe and shiver at how much pain they were in.

As for the plot, it was almost identical to the first movie, which made me question as to whether the director is running out of ideas. Vengeful beings come back to haunt, torture and eventually kill those who have caused them pain. Even after having watched the first film, I still found it confusing as it wasn't clear as to whether this film is a prequel or a sequel, as the flashback scenes in the movie - which were supposed to illuminate - confuse the viewer instead. In addition, there were a few loose ends that don't quite make sense. For one, Ta's father who killed his own wife so that he could have a second one, especially after his mum gave him permission to take on a second wife, made his deed seem so unnecessary.

Ah, the most important part of all when it comes to horror films - the effects. I really couldn't stop myself from grinning as I watched the fake, almost pink blood ooze from the abdomens of the victims, plus the bad makeup and un-scary ghosts throughout the movie. How disappointing! Though I did cringe a few times, it wasn't because of the sight of flesh being torn apart, but due to the screams that were just so shrill and painful. Plus, the gory parts were a tad over the top. Too much unnecessary blood and guts.

As for the cinematography, the surroundings around the house and warehouse did have an eerie feeling to it and with the place looking like a swamp, it's an ideal place for a gory horror like this - you know, with black magic and all. A good long focus was given to Panor's expressions when she was tortured, which made the pain so believable, but the effect is subsequently ruined when the camera focused on the gory parts that just looked so fake.

All in all, the first movie was still a better watch compared to this, mainly because "Long Khong 2" is not in any way unique or new: it's exactly like the first one, just with a slightly different (worse?) storyline to it.
