"Kung Fu Fighter" tells of the story of Ma (Vanness Wu), a gifted young man from a village in China who has the magical gift and strength of kungfu flowing in his veins. Ma's father had left the family after some gangsters had come to demand the settlement of debts, and never returned. To fulfill his mother's dying wish, Ma then journeys to Shanghai in search of his long lost father.

Upon reaching Shanghai with only the shirt on his back, he starts to work as a betting agent's money collector for the triads, led by Sam Cho (Tin Kai-Man). In the meantime, another triad led by Don Ching (Chan Kwok-Kwan) enters the picture. In a misunderstanding with the triads, Ma is cast out from the group but manages to find a new friend in Fatt (Lam Tze Chung) along with a group of underground kungfu warriors. He also falls for a nightclub singer, Goldie (Emme Wong).

Truth be told, I'm not a big fan of kungfu movies and I went to the cinema without high expectations. The only thing that enticed me to even go and watch this movie was the movie poster - which displays most of the same cast who starred in Stephen Chow's "Kung Fu Hustle", a 2004 blockbuster hit in cinemas worldwide.

Whilst the title and the cast were quite similar, it's sad to say that this movie is naught as compared to "Kung Fu Hustle". "Kung Fu Fighter" offers us Vanness Wu (formerly from Chinese band F4), in his third movie deal, with him in the lead starring role. It also features a number of the cast members from "Kung Fu Hustle" but it is all in vain as they didn't bring the same magic that they had weaved in "Kung Fu Hustle". Even with a pretty face like Emme Wong, the movie and its plot fell flat.

The cast did a very bad job in fleshing out the characters and the effects were nothing special. The storyline went haywire - it was truly leading nowhere. I just could not wait for the movie to end. The only thing that compensated for all these was just some kungfu scenes but even they were mediocre, really.

This might sound rather harsh but this is by far the worst kungfu movie I have ever watched. I would only recommend this to those who have a lot of free time and don't have a choice of watching other movies.
