Charlie and Guddu (double role by Shahid Kapoor) are identical twins, born and raised in Mumbai and now hope to leave the squalor behind to find a life of prosperity and dignity. However they don't like each other one bit and they believe they have nothing in common, not even their speech defect. Street-smart Charlie is an illegal bookie at the horsetracks while Guddu is a trainee at a small NGO film in the city, hoping to climb up the corporate ladder. On one fateful day, unusual events unfold and the brothers, now in danger, have to learn to trust each other.

With the spate of recent feel-good Bollywood films, it's good to know that director Vishal Bharadwaj (director) still believes in making some don movies. With so much corruption in Mumbai where one don dies only for another to be born, the plot of "Kaminey" (meaning "Rascals") will pique your interest if you're into this kind of movie.

Charlie and Guddu are identical twins played by lead actor Shahid Kapoor. Charlie is a bookie and always gets hustled by people in his line of work. On the other hand, Guddu works in small firm and believes a simple life. The brothers don't like each other. As fate would have it, they are forced to cross paths when Charlie gets involved in a drug deal and Guddu gets mistaken for Charlie. To make things more complicated, Sweety (Priyanka Chopra) comes in and desperately wants to marry Guddu. Worse, Tashi (Tenzing Zima) the drug lord and also the politician Shekar Bhope (Amol Gupte) want their share as well. Now Charlie and Guddu must find a way out.

One thing for sure, Shahid Kapoor shakes off his good boy image to play the anti-hero. One of his characters has a lisp and the other stammers. He even buffed himself up to give the bad boy character a better look. Fresh from her role earlier this year in "Dostana", Priyanka Chopra plays the pillar of support for the character of Guddu. Too bad her role is wasted again. The only consolation fans will get is the scene where she yells "Did I rape you?" Also, the storywriter of last year's "Taren Zameen Par" Amol Gupte makes his debut playing Priyanka's elder brother in the film. A most interesting fact in "Kaminey" is that there are more bad guys than good guys in the movie.

Plot-wise, Vishal Bharadwaj's execution of a pretty complicated script, full of twist and turns, is absolutely flawless. One can't think of any director in Bollywood who could've pulled it off with such brilliance. The characters are well etched and the dialogue is witty. Each character is well written and as the story moves along, viewers will be glued to their seats.

As for effects, the scene where the twins meet looks very real. Fans will truly believe that there are not one but two Shahid Kapoors. Other than this, the intense violence in the movie is also realistic. Anyone familiar with Vishal previous films would expect the same daily dark alleys in the underworld of Mumbai. A lot of scenes involve the train station and the horse racing track and cinematographer (Tassaduq Hussain) does a great job here to make the environment look convincing.

You can read that besides writing the story and being the director, Vishal also provides the background music and also the songs for the film. The experimental tracks "Dan Te Tan" and "Fatak" will definitely be hit with fans. The "Kaminey" soundtrack goes well because the sequence of the songs takes the movie forward.

There's supposed to be a smooching scene between Priyanka and Shahid but fans will just have to wait for the DVD as the scene is cut if you're watching this in the wrong territory. There are also plenty of rumours lately of an offscreen relationship between the two.

Overall, the director's vision manages to get audiences connected with the lead characters, be they bad or good. Having the most intense and violent scene to climax the film does not disappoint, and so does the surprise happy ending.
