A fresh-faced auburn-haired young actor from the Northumberland region of England, Jamie Bell enjoyed critical praise for his first film role in the delightful "Billy Elliot" (2000). In fact, Bell shared several things in common with the titular character he effortlessly essayed on screen. Like Billy, he harbored a desire to be a ballet dancer but was embarrassed by his skills he kept them hidden from most of his school chums. In the film, Billy becomes the protege of a local ballet teacher (Julie Walters) who encourages him to audition for London's Royal School of Ballet where Bell was actually a student. The young actor won the role over 2000 other aspirants and delivered what one critic described as "a wonderful, moving, mesmerizing performance."
