In this sequel, Ip Man (Donnie Yen) arrives in Hong Kong in 1949, only to discover that martial arts schools there operated like triads rather than more respectable institutions. His efforts to teach his Wing Chun discipline is fraught with poverty and meets resistance from Master Hung (Sammo Hung), a fellow kungfu master who runs a fish market and is being bullied by the British authorities. However, he takes solace in his bright student Leung (Chen Dao Ming) and his loving, patient wife (Lynn Hung @ Xiong Dai Lin). As conflicts brew and tempers flare, an English boxing champ (Darren Shahlavi) insults the Chinese and challenges the whole establishment to an East vs. West showdown, leaving Master Hung and Master Ip to find themselves possible allies.

This movie is addictive!!!!! I have watched it for three times and feel like watching it again!!! If u have watched it only once,I would strongly urged u to watch it again.U will discover new things each time u watch this movie and it is this that makes it very attractive.I really have to take my hat off to Samo hung,the action director of this movie.Despite being so obese,he fought really well and made me sit up to watch as if there are two Ip man there.Trust me,watch it agin and again and again and..........

Donnie Yen reprises his role as Wing Chun master Ip Man in this sequel which shows the events that happened to him and his family after the Japanese Occupation and his move to Hong Kong. Undeterred, he continues teaching martial arts but lacked students till he enrolled a young and impetuous man and his gang of friends after convincing the young protégé of his prowess after being defeated in a match. Ip Man also realises opening a martial arts school was not as simple as he thought, facing some obstacles i.e. ‘rules’ of paying a monthly sum to the corrupt Westerner police force, defeating the masters of current martial arts schools etc. With his second child on the way, Ip Man had to deal with financial issues, trouble caused by his young apprentice, the local corrupt Westerner police force which resulted in the death of a highly respected master in the boxing ring with a Westerner boxer, the Twister. In upholding name and glory of Chinese martial arts, Ip Man agrees to a one-to-one death match with the Twister. Personally found that the first instalment was more touching. The match-up between Ip Man and a western boxer also reminded me slightly of Rocky Balboa story where he had to match up against the Russian played by Dolph Lundgren. Notwithstanding, Donnie Yen puts a solid performance and his affable mien endears the audience, rooting for him with every punch and kick he executes. Also kudos to Samo Hung, who has not been appearing on the silver screen for a while, who despite his size can still execute some mean fighting moves.

Master Ip Man is a well-mannered martial arts teacher who wishes to pass on his knowledge of Wing Chun to the younger generation so that it will not be forgotten. In the beginning, he had difficulty finding students as the art was not well known in Hong Kong at that time. Darren Shahlavi (stuntman-turned-actor, previously bodyguard to Hollywood stars) plays Twister, a boxer with anger management issues who battles Ip in a boxing ring. Master Hung (Sammo Hung) plays a martial arts master in charge of a fish market who has to placate the police so that the rest of the martial arts schools in Hong Kong can operate without any worries.
If the fighting scenes in the first film sent you over the moon, Sammo delivers new action in this instalment. Being the choreographer for the first film, he would have known the audience would be hard to please. His fight scenes portray more variety of the traditional wushu plus Ip Man's legendary high-speed, precise punches. During production, Sammo underwent heart surgery and he expressed dissatisfaction over some fight scenes as he was only recovering - but you won't feel short-changed! Besides that, the multiple camera angles gave us more punches and kicks executed from different point of views - just in case we didn't catch it the first time around!
If you liked the extended feather duster scene from the first movie, then this sequel's highlight would be a prolonged tabletop showdown between Donnie and Sammo. Struggling for balance as they try to knock each other off the table, it is a scene like this that makes us cherish Sammo's awesome choreography over the special effects that are overused in martial arts movies these days.
Donnie Yen's portrayal of Ip Man has definitely shaped our perception of the legendary master and his now well-known Wing Chun, just like how Jet Li had made himself synonymous with Wong Fei Hung.
Just a note though - after much hype about the introduction of Bruce Lee into the story and how 10-year-old Jiang Daiyan was chosen after an extensive talent search, his appearance was brief. However, as he rubs his nose we all know who he'll grow up to be and perhaps we can cross our fingers, in hopes of a third instalment.
