Bruges, the most well-preserved medieval city in the whole of Belgium, is a welcoming destination for travellers from all over the world. But for hit men Ray and Ken, they have been ordered to hide-out there by their boss Harry after a hit-job in London. Very much out of place amidst the gothic architecture, canals and cobbled streets, the two hit men fill their days living the lives of tourists. They find themselves in weird encounters with locals, tourists, violent medieval art, Dutch prostitutes and a potential romance for Ray in the form of Chloe, who may have some dark secrets of her own. And when the call from Harry does finally come, Ken and Ray's vacation becomes a life-and-death struggle of darkly comic proportions and surprisingly emotional consequences.
Indeed a breath of fresh air
This movie was just excellent. The director's playwright roots certainly seem to shine in his big screen efforts and he comes up with a movie unlike the mechanized ones hollywood churns out every day. The film is pretty much split into 2 halves, the first half being an intro and character-centric, which seems boring but isn't because of the wonderful dialogue and acting. Special kudos goes to Colin Farrell who reminds everyone that he can be a good actor. The appearance of Ralph Fiennes at the end serves up more drama and tension and ending is beautifully crafted. In Bruges is definitely one of the better movies of 2008, a must watch for anyone who enjoys their humour and plot and it could even be a possible sleeper for the oscars.
