In her directorial debut, award-winning actress, Angelina Jolie puts the political issues forward by scripting a terrifying story of war and romance. It takes place during the Bosnian War in the 1990s, where in these dark times, Danijel, a soldier who serves the Serbs ends up in a conflicting relationship with a Bosnian, Ajla. Free-spirited Alja is a captive that he oversees, yet he falls in love with her. As the war rages on, their already strained relationship takes on a bigger toll. Will Danijel and Ajla ever have a shot at a happy ending?
What I loved most: The story line
What I really hated: Actors speaking in English
If you are looking for a light and easy movie...this one is not for you. Angelina Jolie's directorial debut turned out to be much, much better than what was expected of the beautiful actress. However, it is also tougher than expected, as it is far from being a "typical" Hollywood war movie. It seems that she really took the time to learn about the war in Bosnia, as it very much depicts the actual situation. Using local actors helped tell the story more realistically, but I wish they spoke in their native language instead of English. Personally, I believe she did a great job, especially with the story line. She has managed to remind us of all the brutality and cruelty that happened not so long ago...Highly recommended!
