Ben "Finn" Finnegan is a good-natured, surf bum-turned-treasure hunter who is obsessed with finding the legendary 18th century Queen's Dowry - 40 chests of exotic treasure that was lost at sea in 1715. In his quest, Finn has sunk everything he has, including his marriage to Tess and his rusty salvage boat, 'Booty Calls'. Working aboard a mega-yacht owned by billionaire Nigel Honeycutt, Finn discovers a vital clue to the treasure's whereabouts. Certain that his luck will change with the newfound information, Finn manoeuvers himself aboard Nigel's yacht and, using his good-nature charm, convinces the tycoon and his Blackberry-wielding, celebutante daughter, Gemma, to join him in the pursuit of the Spanish treasure. Against Tess' better judgment, the search rekindles her love for discovery. But they are not the only ones after the treasure as Finn's mentor-turned-nemesis, Moe Fitch, has also set out to claim the prize...

What I loved most: the title
What I really hated: the movie
wha? what movie? isnt this crap? corney corney crap. loose ends, shallow storyline, worse fake accent.. i dont know what the heck the makers of this films problem is. the film was just down right crappy.. sorry.
If it's been a while since you went on a beach holiday, watch "Fool's Gold" to tide you over for a while. You can experience the same blue waters, white sandy beaches, and go on a treasure hunt adventure with scuba equipment and luxury yacht provided, risk-free and all for the price of a movie ticket!
"Fool's Gold" is definitely chock-full of eye candy, with blonde and bronzed stars Kate Hudson with her 100-watt smile and Matthew McConaughey with his charming Southern twang, teaming up again with that unmistakable onscreen chemistry they possess as a pair. The hi-jinx and adventures they embark upon, while completely unbelievable, is still fresh and fun despite some old tricks from the romantic comedy genre. Of course, this isn't a film that expects you to take it seriously, but that is the whole point of it. Harmless, brainless and sidesplitting entertainment!
Then there's the beautifully photographed island scenery, with the gorgeous blue sea and the lush ocean life that populates it. One of the finest points about "Fool's Gold" is, in fact, the cinematography and the location. This film could almost be a tourism advertisement for Florida or the Caribbean, as you'd probably feel like packing your wetsuits and going on an underwater treasure-hunting excursion right after.
Now, on to the not-so-good parts. A lot of very noticeable mistakes in the plot are simply glossed over by the filmmakers, but as I mentioned before, this film doesn't expect you to take it seriously and thus, it ignores these little, 'unimportant' details in order to keep the story moving. Also, it seems as if romantic comedies of this nature are just unable to explore anything other than the typical, hackneyed storylines which, from very early on in the movie, give more than a hint of what's to come. The ending didn't surprise me one bit, and I'm sure it won't surprise anyone.
What happened to the smart and interesting films of years past? Ones where you couldn't guess what was going to happen next, and didn't make you question the fact that the bad guys are always really bad shots and the good guys are unbreakable. Perhaps the makers of this film know its market TOO well.
Maybe, when it comes to rom-coms, people just don't want any risks involved (except the 'safe' ones of course), and they want to know that when they walk out of the cinema, they will be able to sigh with satisfaction and go home and sleep at night, revelling in contrivance and artificiality. These are probably the same people who object strongly to films that make you uncomfortable and stir up emotions and thoughts you never knew you possessed.
Ah, who am I kidding? "Fool's Gold" is one heck of a good time, like a holiday fling on sunny beaches, and for goodness sakes, we just wanna have fun at the movies, don't we? This will definitely perk you up if you're feeling down because, hey, you know there can only be a happy ending!
