Pop Musical of The Year

What I loved most: A desperate Effie singing ' And I am telling you i'm not going'

I heard from my good friend that some of the spontaneous audience in Tampines Central cinema ended up in applaud for this film. Well, I nearly clap ( but was too timid) to agree with that Jennifer Hudson huge voice when unleashing the song " And I am telling you I'm not going'' in despair and desperation. Beyonce Knowles also delivered reasonably well in the song "'Listen'' which evokes unhappines in her marriage and scheming husband. And she was deadly gorgeous and stunning in some of the beauty shots. The show also gives good music (i.e pop, rock and roll, disco, R&B and even gospel ) and shimmering costumes which sparkle... It was somehow a disappointment when it lost in the Oscar songs category. However, the slight drawback-- Dreamgirls was very much like a pop musical rather than classic.

Very Average

What I loved most: Beyonce Knowles

What I really hated: Hackneyed Stage-y Production

Am I the only one who thinks Jennnifer Hudson' s performance and singing was overrated? Hers is just not that developed of a voice and incapable of sustaining true melisima. It's a big-ish voice but shrieky when it gets high and she can't sustain her notes for as long as you would expect. I think her performance of the big number "And I Am Telling You" was fine, not great. Seriously, it's a lot of hype to have to live up to. Jennifer Holiday's original version (look it up through You-know-what-tube-site) is so much better it's like apples and oranges. I thought the movie was long. None of the songs performed by the girl group were remotely as hummable as even a Supremes B-side. However, Beyonce was just unbelievably gorgeous throughout and held the camera in every frame. It's just that in contemporary movie-making genre, unless the film is actually trying to be subversive and banking on the surreal factor, an actor can't seriously expect to look into the camera and sing his/her thoughts without arising the fair amount of audience derision. It's just not the Rodgers/Hammerstein era anymore. The filmakers successfully addressed this dilemna in 'Chicago' by treating the musical numbers as formulations that took placed within the imagination of the lead character(s). Throughout this film, I found the earnest segues into musical scenes especially ludicrous and howl-making. A disappointment.

Jennifer Hudson- YOU GO GIRL!

Fans of musical would fall in love with this sparkling jewel of a musical. it might not be wonderfully acted, but the music, costumes, visuals would be more than enough to satisfy you. Jamie Foxx and Beyonce though in the lead roles, fell below expectations. Foxx, despite being an academy award winner, did not put much charisma and soul into his character well enough to be convincing and ended up being inconsequential. Beyonce was very very pretty but still, her character wasn't developed well. Thankfully, the supporting cast consisting of Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Hudson kept the movie "alive". Their characters were well moulded and very very soulful. Kudos to Hudson for that impressive showing. Not only does she impresses with her pipes, her character stands out ostentiously despite being in the supporting role. Thumbs up to Bill Condon for the impressive directing. On the whole, Dreamgirls does deliver what it promises (the music, costumes, visuals) and is enjoyable from start to end, despite the much-to-be-desired acting from the lead roles.
