Set in South Africa, this movie is rumoured to be a "Cloverfield"-type sci-fi about an extraterrestrial race that is forced to live in slum-like conditions on Earth and suddenly finds a friend in a government agent who is exposed to their biotechnology. Alien spacecrafts are seen hovering over many locations, interrupting daily human lives and raising concerns from the residents of the area. This film is also said to be a sort of social commentary, diverging from what you would usually expect from films featuring aliens.
What I loved most: Realism, special effects, bloody scenes, great acting, cat food...
What I really hated: Some plotholes
Of all the sci-fi movies I've seen, District 9 managed to top 'em all. Maybe it was the hilarious profanity use with an Afrikaaner accent, the design of the aliens, the epic story...etc. I've seen some people who compared District 9 to Avatar. You can't actually compare them, because Avatar is a blockbuster movie with big-name actors, and a well-known director, while District 9 is a low-budget, with newbies and a director just making his debut. What's more, District 9 shows us the inhumanity of humans, xenophobia and apartheid like themes, while managing to make us laugh at the cat food scenes, that hilarious accent, and some cheesy but very funny lines. Worthy of an Oscar, this one. Too bad everyone turned to Hollywood made films.
