Have you ever watched Prachya Pinkaew's "Fury"? It will be difficult for people not to compare this latest Chinese production to movies like "Ong Bak" and "Fury". For one, the storyline in "Coweb" is quite similar to the one in "Fury". What eventually sets the two actioners apart is the confusing and fuzzy storyline.
The weak story in "Coweb" is exposed by its rather problematic structure in successfully linking one event to another. In fact, there are loopholes along the way that makes us wonder how the director could possibly miss them. In short, the movie starts as quickly as it ends without giving much character justification.
To add more confusion for viewers, the camerawork doesn't help. Instead, it looks more like a work of amateurs. The scene changes too much and too often, especially during fight scenes. Most of the time it becomes a great big blur.
Action-wise however, it is well above average. Still, despite there being more action in every scene than plain talking, the battle between these characters often fails to capture the attention. For example, with too many fancy kicks in one particular scene, it can be rather dull and uninteresting.
For newcomer Jiang Lu Xia, there will have to be plenty of work to get started on if she wants to stay in business. Her lack of facial expression and interaction with the camera are some of the major turn-offs in most of her non-action scenes. The blatant overkill in the showing of multiple injuries sustained during filming is not going to help endear her character to the audience!
This reviewer recommends this one for leisurely viewing on a quiet weekday when there is nothing to be done in the office.
