What I loved most: Added scenes did not ruin the original story
What I really hated: May not justify the 3D only price tag
The first thing that came to mind when I read a special edition of Avatar was being released was that this must be a ploy to get more money from the already top grossing film of all time. Something to "extend" its theatrical run by adding some deleted scenes and what not, call it a Special Edition and charge double for being only in 3D. Or was it? The film buff in me just had to find out. So I decided to relived the moment, again. I bought the $14 ticket and went with an open mind. Admittedly, James Cameron has already made a masterpiece combining a good solid story with mesmerising visual effects and awe inspiring music. This Special Edition just adds several non-key scenes in that fortunately still made sense. They didn't have to be there for the story to flow better, but it was good to have seen them. It didn't completely feel like it was added for the sake of adding something. It had just the right scenes to help fill the small yet unnecessary blank spots in the story, without ruining it. On a whole, I feel it may not have justified the 3D price tag if you have already caught this film, but if you have not or feel you want to catch it again, rest assured that Avatar: Special Edition still delivers an experience. Just don't expect a completely new experience.
